Alan Hevesi needs to resign and withdraw from the race. Speaking as someone who is responsible for financial controls myself, that behavior is unacceptable. "I forgot" is no excuse at all, which Hevesi should know. There should be controls in place to make sure that a civil servant cannot "forget" to pay back something funded by taxpayer money (assuming it's even true that he forgot). This saddens me, as I've actually always liked Hevesi, but he cannot be trusted to watch over the behavior of others if he can show such a lapse of controls over his own behavior.
I would expect Spitzer to withdraw his support too. Really, setting yourself up as judge over the ethics of others doesn't work if you only exercise that judgment when the person isn't on your side. Hevesi broke state law, and as Attorney General, let alone the potential next governor, Spitzer should withdraw his support ASAP.
