All That Sympathy Just Oozing Through
A month ago, Pinko Feminist Hellcat posted about how women are cast in the role of natural victims and the bullshit myth about rape victims getting tons of sympathy. Proving her point about what a crock that myth really is, zuzu at Feministe posted about the Jennifer Moore case. Zuzu's point was how Jennifer Moore should have been the ideal victim - white, young, pretty, upper middle class - but that the Post may have doctored the photo to play up that angle even more. The unspoken part of zuzu's post - that you just never see this kind of media coverage when the victim isn't white, young, and pretty - is an extremely valid one.
However, all of that got derailed to a discussion of Jennifer Moore's actions. Go read the comments section on zuzu's post and spot all the sympathy for a girl who was raped and murdered just oozing out. Well, that is if one defines "sympathy" as lectures about how stupid she was to go out and get drunk and what responsibility she bears for "allowing herself" to become a victim by not following all the rigidly prescribed restrictions on female behavior.
