That 80s Day

First I ponder about how I possibly could have liked Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. Then I seem to remember I also liked 99 Red Balloons and Walking on Sunshine. Now I also remember my answer to Boy George’s musical question. Yes, Boy, I did indeed want to hurt you for making such insipid music.

Your task of the day. Come up with five songs from the 1980s that you’re embarrassed to admit you like today. I’ve admitted to three so far. When memory dredges up some other monstrosities, I’ll append to the list.

Goody Two-Shoes - Adam Ant
Pretty in Pink – Psychedelic Furs
Turning Japanese – Vapors
I Want Candy – Bow Wow Wow
What I Like About You - Romantics

About as hideous a list as I can stomach

Actually I still like What I Like About You.

Oh man this could be painful. I still have a CD from a band that opened for Judas Priest. Bought it simply becasue they were the opening act (Johnny Crash) I couldn't tell you then nor now one damn song they play. Okay they released Neighborhood Threat in 1990, but it was related to my 80's music.

Music that I liked that really sucked?

Obsession (Animotion) gets stuck in my head whenever I hear it, like it? Well not really.

Asia, anything by Asia.

Staying with the continental theme, anything by Europe.

And intergallactically, Venus, Bananarama.

The Rapture, Blondie (first "mainstream" rap song)

And out comes a man from Mars
And ya try to run
But he's got a gun
And he shoots ya dead
And he eats your head
And then you're in the man from Mars

Ha, now get that out of your head before it explodes.

And to tell the truth I don't get U2. I bought War on cassette, and figured the washed out muffled sound was a result of a bad tape. Bought it again on vinyl before I decided that they just plain sucked.

I'm going to have to go on iTunes and look for the 80s songs I used to like but now don't. I can think of several embarrassing 80s songs I still like, but that wasn't the question.

Okay, memory refreshed.

Songs I Used to Like, But Don't Anymore
Love Plus One - Haircut 100
Mickey - Toni Basil
Cool Places - Sparks
She Blinded Me With Science - Thomas Dolby
Obsession - Animotion

Songs I Never Liked, Go Me
Wake Me Up Before You Go Go - Wham
Do You Really Want to Hurt Me - Culture Club
Take On Me - A-Ha
Too Shy - Kajagoogoo
Everybody Have Fun - Wang Chung

Songs I Still Like
99 Luftballons (yes, the German version, not so much the English one) - Nena
You Spin Me Right Round - Dead or Alive
Things Can Only Get Better - Howard Jones
Der Kommissar (again, German version) - Falco
Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles

I have mixed feelings about I Want Candy. I do, however, still very much like Louis Quatorze and Do You Wanna Hold Me. I just don't particularly consider those embarrassing choices.

BTW, for Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and Do You Really Want to Hurt Me, you could actually replace with "any song by [insert artist here]".

Anything and Everything by Howard Jones. I loved that music in the 80's and still get a kick out of much of it today, although I am embarrassed to admit it.

As to Both "Goody-Two-Shoes" and "I Want Candy" I loved both of those tunes in the day and still LOVE them today and I'm not the least bit embarrassed to admit it. Both are balls out swing jams that deserve to be performed by a big band rather than Rock combos.

Thank god for Malcolm McClarren, he may take way to much credit for the pistols, but he did make Punk much more accessible with The Ants, Bow Wow Wow, and Culture Club. And before you go saying that McClarren killed punk by intorducing the aforementiond bands, that dubious distinction goes to the Clash. A great band, but the first Punk act comprised of real musicians. When the Clash made it clear in 1979 that Punks could actually play their instruments Punk Rock officially died.
