Learn From My Mistakes
So, if you happen to live in a state that has a large Italian population and you visit a state that doesn't, don't order "Italian" food.
Just sayin'.
Steak and corn, dammit! From now on, I'm eating steak and corn. I'm in Iowa, for chrissakes! What was I thinking?

This is what, on The Sopranos, they call 'Elvis Country.' You know, where they've never seen an Italian or Jew.
Any faithful readers from Iowa?

I'm not from Iowa, just up-state NY which is probably just as bad I guess...although I wouldn't consider seeing an Italian or Jew a sign of cultural sophistication.
I'm not hatin'...just sayin'.

i know exactly what you mean except with mexican food. the idea of mexican food is entirely different here in california than it was when i lived back east.
steak and corn... things could be worse! :)

They don't have Italians in upstate New York? Where did Joe Bruno come from? Parts of upstate New York actually do have significant Italian populations. Most people don't know that the Poconos in Pennsylvania has a significant Italian population either, but it does. Lots of Northern Italian ancestry.
I also don't think my mother was suggesting it was a sign of cultural sophistication. I'm really not sure why you even read that into her remark.

Yeah, but I'm guessing that in California, it's more authentic Mexican food, what with it being a lot closer to Mexico than New York and all. ;) Hey, but we have some really authentic Canadian food here.

Mexican food here in Oklahoma is reliable.
On the other hand, I'm always suspicious of the seafood.

I'm trying to figure out how Tony Soprano became an icon of cultural sophistication. He's just a killer with a sense of humor. That Elvis country thing is just one of his little 'jokes.'

being closer to mexico helps... and the fact that we have a large mexican population. of course those go a bit hand in hand. :)
authentic canadian food...heh, now i'm craving poutine. lol

Don't take my remarks the wrong way, I was just being snarky. We have TONS of Italians up here in Amsterdam. I guess I saw Tony Sopranos remark as a belief that an area without certain ethnicities is somehow lacking "cultural sophistication".
Thank God your Mom isn't quoting Al Swearengen from "Deadwood".
