Mark This Day In Your Calendars

It's finally happened.

A momentous occasion.

There were people who said I was not a real American for never having done this.

That's right. I finally watched The Godfather.

Yes, it was excellent.

Is everybody happy?

Comments

They'll still never get ME to watch Pulp Fiction. :) And I've never seen any of the Godfather movies all the way through either...

Two questions: did you like it, and did you follow it with Godfather II?

Upon closer reading, I see that you've already answered the first question. You did like the movie. Planning on seeing the second?

Elayne - Although I did think "Pulp Fiction" was a good movie, I can understand why someone might not want to see it. Tarantino does have a thing for gratuitous violence. The violence in "The Godfather" does make sense in the context of the story. You would be hard-pressed to make a realistic movie about the mafia without violence. However, having seen all of Tarantino's work, with the exception of "Reservoir Dogs", I believe you could cut out at least half the violence without in any way taking away from the story. Tarantino's strengths are in his ability to write dialogue and his cinematography. He definitely writes some of the best dialogue going.

Jon aka Marlonalrobert - I'm glad you picked up on the fact that I liked the movie. Yes, I plan to see "Godfather II". I'll probably even watch "Godfather III", although nearly everyone tells me I can skip it. I just like to complete something once I've started it. It's the same reason I read Dante's entire "Divine Comedy", even though I only had to read one to complete Gallatin's Great Books requirement. I don't think you can comprehend the artist's full vision by seeing/reading only part of a complete set. And believe me, I don't think "Godfather III" could be more boring than reading "Purgatorio" and "Paradiso". There is a reason most people only read "Inferno". Nonetheless, the last two do put the first into proper perspective.

It was the "Yes, it was excellent" part that gave it away.

There are a whoe host of classics I have only recently seen as a result of joining Netflix including:

To Catch a Theif
On the Waterfront
The Apartment
and of course Bubba Ho-Tep

I have never seen Apocolyps Now
