Take That, NYC Bashers!

To all the morons who have told me over the years what a crime-ridden cesspool New York City is - This one's for you. Our crime rate is about the same as Henderson, Nevada. Ne-freaking-vada.

This is the same FBI that allows its Muslim agents to refuse to interrogate and wiretap Muslim suspects and then promotes them to field operations in Saudi Arabia or other desk jobs?

Not necessarily, Laurence. The stats are probably kept by a different department than the ones that handle field operations.

While per capita data is interesting, it's not always particularly useful for assessing risk - a one-stop light town that has a traffic fatality at its only intersection might then up as the "most dangerous place for driving in America!"

That said, during my last trip to NYC, I was not robbed or killed. However, I've never been robbed or killed anywhere, so that's not saying a lot.

The crime rate is not a per capita rate. It is the rate per 100,000 people, which corrects for precisely the statistical anomaly you mention. I would never use the per capita rate, because I am well aware of the skewing that can occur.
