Bizarro-Mikey World

More reasons to hate Mad Mike. The city is now fining businesses with awnings that have too many words. One gym in Brooklyn received a $12,500 fine for having the club's logo and phone number on his awning. The horror! A logo and phone number on the awning. But that's just Mikey, preferring to do the right thing instead of being popular. Sure, the right thing would have been to rescind the idiotic 1961 zoning ordinance that prohibits having a logo and phone number on an awning, but we're now living in Bizarro-Mikey-City, where doing the right thing equals whatever enters Mikey's head.

I can't remember the particulars of Bloomberg's opponent, but surely he couldn't have been as bad as MB has turned out to be.

That’s what bureaucrats do when facing layoffs. They look for any fine, penalty, or fee they can possibly get. There are no rules too petty to enforce if it means more revenue. Who cares if it drives out people and businesses? They need to preserve their jobs today.

Jane, it was Mark Green, who is possibly the most hated man in NYC. D'Amato first beat him for Senator in 1986. Schumer beat him out for the Democratic nomination for Senator in 1998, the year someone finally beat D'Amato. He has also run for Congress and Governor in the past, never getting elected. The only thing he did ever manage to get elected to was Public Advocate, and those elections were virtually uncontested. Mark Green is pretty much unelectable in NYC. It says something about Bloomberg, though, that the election was as close as it was. Green was once described as "Al Gore -- without the personality" if that gives you some idea.
