Analyze This

Girolamo Lo Verso may be an expert on the Mafia psyche, but he clearly is not an expert on the American psyche.

Another Hollywood myth, he said, is the idea that mob bosses would ever go to a shrink as Robert De Niro did in the hit comedy "Analyze This."

(snip)

"It has never happened. The very idea is preposterous."

No shit, Sherlock. That's why it was a comedy, because the subject was preposterous.

What ... this guy's never seen that HBO documentary that's been running for the past few years about the NJ mob guy that goes to a shrink? I love that show ... they should base a series on it.

A couple of years ago while working as a bouncer and bartender on Manhatten's West Side I got chummy with a group of Columbo wiseguys who hung out in my bar and ran a slew of rackets in the area. I've always had a slight criminal bent but was never what you'd call hardcore. We did drugs and chased girls together and I eventually partnered up and did a little coke dealing on the side with one of them. I was a lousy drug dealer. Most of it went up my own nose or I it used as an enticement for restroom blowjobs. But as lame as I was in operating in their world I could never get over the difference between the myth and the reality (Much of my sex in those days was performed in the company of these guys) that these goombahs displayed in the sack. Lo Verso's article in the Time's Magazine struck an immediate cord of truth with me.I don't know if it was all the blow or what but a lot of these guys seemed to chase girls out of habit and hardly knew what to do with them once they got in the sack. It's like it was just part of the image.
